CDS Guidebook Update

Page history last edited by Vinod Aggarwal, MD, MSHI, FHIMSS 13 years, 9 months ago

Background

HIMSS, in collaboration with other societies, will publish in 2011 an update to the award-winning, bestselling 2005 guidebook Improving outcomes with clinical decision support: an implementer's guide.  The new edition will draw from and update the 2005 material, as well as other pertinent content presented in the 2009 HIMSS-led, collaboratively developed book Improving medication use and outcomes with clinical decision support, a step by step guide (www.himss.org/cdsguide).  Organizations that will participate in the 2011 update include HIMSS, the Scottsdale InstituteAMDISAMIA, and others.

This updated and enhanced general guidebook will serve as the hub of a series of publications, the spokes of which will include articles/monographs/booklets that cover applying CDS to specific areas - e.g. medication use and safety, specific Meaningful Use requirements, etc.  Discussion on these topics are currently unfolding elsewhere on this wiki

Process

  • New edition development will begin with content from 2005 and 2009 CDS guidebooks.  An editorial leadership team consisting of those who drove development of the previous 2 books is being formed to guide development of this new publication.
  • We're planning to layer on additional information about Meaningful Use and other major healthcare/HIT developments into the foundational material, and update and enhance the implementation guidance by leveraging a broad network of pertinent stakeholders.
  • For example, we're engaging users of previous versions of the guide to join the process (yes, this means you!) and share feedback, suggestions and material for enhancing the guide's content into an even more valuable resource for improving outcomes with CDS in your organization.  Likewise, consumers for such guidance who are not familiar with the earlier books are invited to learn more about those (www.himss.org/cdsguide) and provide input on how this book can best meet your needs.
  • CDS Five Rights Framework: Chapter 3 in the 2005 guidebook provides a model of inpatient and outpatient workflows, and corresponding opportunities for CDS interventions.  The chapter defines 'objective classes' and provides thoughts on CDS intervention types to consider at various points in workflow to address objectives within those various classes.  The 2009 CDS guide on medication use built on this foundation by introducing the "CDS 5 rights" framwork for addressing CDS/clinical objectives.  That is, it calls for getting the right information, to the right person, in the right format, through the right channel, at the right point in workflow.  Click here to review, critique and enhance a framework that builds on this earlier work to underpin the 2011 CDS guide.
  • CDS Checklists: The 2005 and 2009 CDS guides describe specific approaches to optimizing the value of CDS programs and interventions.  In the 2011 book we are planning to highlight in a 'checklist' format the key CDS intervention and program success factors.  Over time we'll validate and refine these success factors to ensure that following them drives measurably better outcomes in clinical areas widely targeted for performance improvement.  You can review and comment on a strawman version of this checklist here.
  • Below on this page is a starting point for gathering feedback.  Feel free to add a comment in the comment box below or directly onto the page under "Suggested new/modified content."  Likewise, your feedback on the updated 5 Rights Framework and the CDS Success Factor Checklist on the pages above are welcomed.  The more specific you can be about what should be added/changed the better.
  • We'll have periodic phone calls to discuss content development real time.  If you'd like to participate, please add your name to the participants page - we'll be using this to develop a formal roster of project participants and roles.
  • The first project planning/brainstorming call is 6/23/10: click here for more information.

Suggested Additions/Modifications

  • [suggestion]; [where it should go]; [your name/organization]
  • [suggestion]: More formal section or chapter on institutional organizational structures to manage and decide on CDS, appropriate links (IT, exec committees, nursing, ect) both for the initial development of CDS, maintanance, and overall knowledge management, roles within the committee like a director of CDS and how/why it is advantageous for this to be separate from CMIO. [where it should go]: this is touched on in various places in the existing guides, but I think it should be an independent section with structure examples of high performing institutions; [your name/organization]: Kendall Rogers/University of New Mexico and Society of Hospital Medicine
